The VARD 7 085 is designed to conduct maritime surveillance, in conjunction with maritime air patrol assets, to monitor New Zealand’s EEZ, the South Pacific and in the Southern Ocean. Tasks in the southern half of the EEZ are mostly offshore, but activity in the south almost doubles during winter, coinciding with the worst sea states.
HMNZS ‘Wellington’ and ‘Otago’ were delivered to the New Zealand Navy in 2010. Since delivery, these patrol vessels have proven the quality of their design by enduring Sea State 9 conditions in the Ross Sea, and other expeditions in the Antarctic.
