The VARD 9 105 is a Hydrographic Survey vessel designed for the South African Navy to perform hydrographic surveys and scientific research around Southern Africa and Antarctica. The core mission of the vessel is hydrographic and oceanographic surveys. Secondary mission capabilities include search and rescue, disaster relief, replenishment at sea and cargo resupply.
The vessel is designed to Lloyd’s Naval Rules for worldwide operation, with capability to operate in Antarctica in the summer months.
Accommodation for 120 sailors and scientists is provided along with aviation and medical facilities.
