Naval and Security Vessels

Vard Marine’s suite of proven designs for Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) offer the operational and performance capabilities needed by navies, coast guards and other maritime security agencies around the world.

These OPVs, ranging in size from 25 to 125 metres, operate in tough coastal and offshore environments from the tropics to polar waters.

Our OPV design philosophy

Traditionally, patrol vessels were designed to the same military standards as surface combatants. This approach resulted in higher shipyard costs amplified by high-cost equipment and systems requirements. As a result, OPVs were unnecessarily expensive and often unsuited to their intended function.

Vard Marine’s approach, however, is different. We design our offshore patrol vessels to high quality commercial standards, and fit with a weapons system as appropriate. We work to simplify the design, procurement and construction phases to produce a product you will be happy with.

The client advantage

By taking this approach we eliminate unnecessary expenses for OPVs, whose primary purpose is surveillance and security rather than frontline combat.

This “fit for purpose” approach offers the best solution for the budget and expectations of this vessel class – a ship that is rugged, reliable and capable of sustained periods at sea.

How we work

Our experienced teams work closely with our clients, using sophisticated in-house software tools and our extensive vessel database to define the vessel characteristics that meet your requirements.

Furthermore, we mediate costs by designing for commercially available, good quality equipment, and improve crew well-being and performance effectiveness through:

  • reduced ship motions
  • low noise and vibration levels
  • comfortable accommodations, and
  • human-factors engineering.

Our designs also include the weapons systems that meet the requirements of patrol vessels.

We don’t stop there

Vard Marine offers continual support to our clients, beginning with concept development,  through sea trials and finally with the delivery of the patrol vessel.

In addition, we provide shipyards with a design-and-build package, including detailed design, material data and complete equipment packages.

Lastly, if needed, we can assist our clients to secure financing. Through our partners and parent company, Fincantieri, we offer post-delivery training, logistics support and fleet maintenance.
